The Computing Department at John Kyrle High School is committed to preparing students for an ever-evolving world. In today's rapidly changing technological landscape, it is crucial that students are equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and experiences to thrive in lessons and in their further careers. Our department's mission is to provide a comprehensive education that is not only informative but also fun, interactive, and engaging. We believe that learning should be an enjoyable process that motivates students to explore and innovate.

Each member of our team brings a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching that translates into high-quality, student-centred lessons. The curriculum at the iMedia and Computer Science Department is meticulously planned to ensure it covers all essential areas while remaining adaptable to new advancements and technologies. We emphasize hands-on learning, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios. This approach not only solidifies their understanding but also helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

In addition to core lessons, we offer a variety of projects and extracurricular activities that provide further opportunities for students to explore their interests and talents. From coding clubs to multimedia projects, these activities are designed to spark curiosity and creativity. They also help students build a portfolio of work that can be valuable for future academic and career opportunities

KEY STAGE 3

At JKHS, our KS3 Computing program aims to equip students with essential digital literacy, programming, and problem-solving skills. Through engaging and interactive lessons, students will learn coding, computational thinking, data handling, and online safety. Our curriculum is designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, preparing students to navigate and succeed in an increasingly digital world. By encouraging curiosity and innovation, we aim to build a strong foundation in computing that will support students' academic growth and future career opportunities. Staying safe online- Personal safety online, right through to the effects of online crime and how to prevent it.

  • Understanding Computers
  • Flowol – To help logical thinking with flow diagrams in a fun and interactive way to guide learning in coding environments.
  • Impact of Computing - Looking at how computers have developed and how they are impacting our world today focusing on the environmental impacts and the social divide.
  • Spreadsheets – An interactive and developmental practical lesson, which takes students from the basics to advance spreadsheets.
  • Multimedia – To understand the concepts of design and planning for a project.
  • Graphics – Taking students through from the basics to advanced Photoshop. Focusing on the key elements of design, branding, and how to follow a client in the ‘real world’
  • Website design – A practical approach to website design and how to create effective website design.

GCSE Computing Mission 

Our GCSE Computing program at John Kyrle High School emphasises the importance of hard work, resilience, and dedication to studying. Students will delve into advanced topics in Computer Science, such as programming, algorithms, and data representation, requiring a strong commitment to mastering complex concepts. In Creative iMedia, students will explore digital media, graphic design, and project management, honing their creative and technical skills.

We believe that perseverance and a proactive approach to learning are key to success in these challenging fields. By fostering a disciplined and determined mindset, we prepare students not only for their exams but also for future endeavours in technology and media. Our goal is to instill a passion for both programming and graphic design, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Computer Science 

The Computer Science course is an engaging and practical subject that allows students to develop their problem-solving skills and creativity. Students will be able to learn the core applications of computer science in multiple different sectors. Students will be able to analyse, design and create solutions to different problems as well as test and evaluate them.

Computer Science Curriculum 

 

Creative iMedia

The Creative imedia course allows students to take a creative approach to computing. This course will inspire and give students the confidence and skills for the ever-growing digital media sector and beyond. You will design, plan, create and review client scenarios to meet the demands of the ever changing world and target audience.

  • Subject: CNAT L1/L2 Creative imedia K834
  • Exam Board: OCR

How will I be assessed?  Coursework: 2 x coursework units, which are completed in Y10/11.  Exam: 40% and sat at the end of Year 11.
