School Transport

We encourage students to walk or cycle to school wherever possible, as this is best for their mental and physical wellbeing, as well as being better for the environment.  To support students to do this we have a large, purpose built cycle shelter with CCTV security as well as two entrance/exit gates to the school site.  If students are cycling then we strongly encourage the use of high-visibility clothing and a cycle helmet.

If walking or cycling is not possible, we encourage bus travel. This is preferred to decrease congestion, minimise pollution and carbon emissions as well as disruption to our neighbours.  Details about bus travel can be found below.

Finally, where car transport is unavoidable, we would ask that parents share cars where possible and are considerate of local residents.  Cars should not stop in the yellow-boxed area at the front of school or enter the school site (unless to collect a student who is unwell or who has movement limitations).

For students who wish to travel by bus there are three options: 1) buses run by Herefordshire Council, 2) buses contracted by JKHS and 3) public (service) buses.  Details of each can be found below.

Herefordshire Council Buses

If your child is attending their nearest school and you meet one of the criteria below, then Herefordshire Council have a legal obligation to provide free transport to and from school.

The criteria are:

  • you live over three miles from school
  • OR you have income-based free school meals and live over two miles from school
  • OR your child's route to school is less than three miles, but too dangerous to walk even when accompanied.

If you do not meet the criteria, the council may be able to offer you a chargeable seat via the 'vacant seat' scheme. To find out more information regarding school transport and the application process, please click the link to Herefordshire Council's webpage School and college transport

If you are a new starter, please ensure you apply for your child's bus seat in plenty of time in order to assist the council with bus availability and route planning.

JKHS Contracted Buses

JKHS contract external transport providers to run five bus services, three that serve the Forest of Dean and two that serve the Little Dewchurch/Much Dewchurch area.

Tickets for these services are available via our partner ShuttleID and are payable via monthly direct debit. Students show a QR code when boarding the bus which the driver scans, this allows parents to check valid tickets as well as providing boarding notifications and tracking information for parents.
